Industrial design is legally protected work. And should be. It doesn't matter how you price your competing product.
How many other ways are there to design a simple tablet/touch screen phone before they start looking the same?
A car has many design elements that these slate type devices don't have the luxury of.

I hope this rumor is true. If Apple is going to bring out the Tablet Mac, I would be buying one as long as it is a fully functional computer. I like my Fujitsu Tablet PC; but, it is still Windows-based PC. If Apple is going to market this, I guess their tablet Mac would be a very slick unit. I think non-tablet PC users are quick to dismiss the tablet format without knowing and experiencing it themselves. Fujitsu, Lenovo, Electrovaya, Motion Computer and a few others make a very light weight tablets. I don't like ones from Gateway and Toshiba as their units are way too heavy and chunky (and ugly looking to boot).

What a stupid statement. Are you aware that Apple is an American company? So is Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco, GE and other world-leading companies.
What's your alternative? Can you even name more than one world-class Chinese company?

There is a reason we do not build these products and it has been well covered through this thread. Can you name any good products made by those companies that you mentioned, that are actually built in the US. Just watch TV, you do not see Apple advertising that they make there products in China, but you do see a bunch of other companies that slap a "Made in the USA" label gain Patriot approval. I avoid those products and save my money for products that have better quality; I dont innately hate american products, but experience has proved that they are inferior to build qualities of other nations. :apple::D

Also, it would depend on the viewing distance to be able to call it a retina display. Heck, a 1080p TV from 10 feet away is a retina display.

My friend (an apple employee) used his discount and ordered for me at the store. I don't think he ever asked me about shipping, I assumed it was standard for every consumer.
I can see an extra week to added on to throw in an extra gig and ship from China, not NINE days! Either way it will be here and in the meantime I'll HOPE FOR THE BEST, and expect yonah.

Again, the real crux of your argument is that people are 'comfortable' with what they already know. If you were to put that aside and judge between the two systems objectively, I can't see how anyone would actually choose imperial over metric. Metric is the future. This reminds me of the Dvorack keyboard layout vs the familiar QWERTY.
The Dvorack is objectively superior because it allows for higher wpm speeds than QWERTY. At the time of keyboard construction, however, Dvorack was prone to a lot more jamming by typists who were too fast for the physical limitations of the machine. Obviously that isn't a problem in the digital era, so logically we should switch to Dvorack if were had the option of starting from the beginning.
But, we're not starting from the beginning, are we? At this point switching to a new keyboard layout would be a huge undertaking for perhaps minimal gain.
The same applies to the metric system. At best it can offer minimal gains for the average person (something which, as I have pointed out above, may not be true in all cases) while costing a great deal. Even in the best of times, I think it would foolish to squander billions over such a petty thing when companies are free to shift production to be maximally efficient for themselves. If a company will make more money (or save it) using metric, then it will. There's no need to mandate it across every facet of life.

Same here except that I am not feeling quite so evil since the only other computers available to her are an old Dell P3 Latitude and an even more ancient P2 Sony Vaio running Windows 98. A G4 PowerBook Ti with a 60GB hard drive is going to be quite a step up for her and I just hope that it continues to last for many more years, although the fans have been making an odd noise for about 6-months now that worries me.
Anyway, I'm hoping that this rumour is correct, as usual. The Page 2 (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060907103621.shtml) rumour that we aren't going to see this update until next year (presumably to coincide with the Santa Rosa chipset release) was really depressing. I don't have much in the way of a wish-list for the new machines (everything upgraded would be great) but just want to make sure that I order something that won't be replaced with something better in the next month, much like my PowerBook that was superceded about 2-months later with Aluminium PowerBooks that kicked its ass.

helio can send up dates to myspace.
so why not a .mac phone updater where you can send podcast to your .mac account through the phone. there could be some intresting things going on if apple has delayed the phone this long.... or maybe it will be just a phone that work on the cingular network. seeing that the itunes phones use cingular

Are you talking about MP3 players in general, or specifically the iPod with scroll wheel, white design etc? Or are you just talking about Jonny Ive? I am intrigued by this fact that you are aware of but most other people aren't.
I would also argue that Apple aren't necessarily innovators, but what they do better than anyone else is spot the Next Big Thing and then manage to make it look so good and work so well that it becomes incredibly popular. This was the case with the MP3 player, the smartphone, touchscreens, tablets... and those are just the primary examples.

This is simply not true. Even though Core Duo has been out for about half a year, a lot of pc laptops are still sold with Pentium-M or Celeron-M cpus.
MacBook can keep the Core Duo for a while longer (until November, for example).

People are ready for a new iPhone. If it doesn't come out by June, some will lose patience and buy an iPhone 4, or worse, will be tempted by the false promises coming from every phone offering 4G service.
Didn't read all the posts, but you realize there will be one like this soon:
Apple already has the iphone 5 in their warehouses. After the botched ipad2 fiasco, they finally learned their lesson.
Once the hype machine starts they will again make the iphone 5 scarce, so people stand in line, just to get press coverage.
