I don't get how people can view the iPhone design as dated (assuming externals here). I've been playing around with several Android phones lately, and they are all horrible cheap, plastic toys in comparison. I was surprised to find that even Android, the OS, is still slow, jerky and unpolished versus the good old iOS.
The only devices that can even compete on sheer quality and solid design are the Nokia n8s and e7s. In particular the n8. Just a pity about the software there.
By all means update the iPhone �*development is good. But I don't see any need to forcefully change the design of it. It's actually pretty damn good.
I also think the iPhone 4 design is still fresh after two years of the same look with the 3G/3Gs. Increasing the screen to 4" would not hurt.

Reducing the Mac Pro's size is a huge step backwards! It will reduce space for storage, ram, heat fans, cpu, heat sinks, PCI-X/gpu slots, and optical drives!
The only thing that will increase is HEAT! That will lead to reliability problems as more stress will be put on internal components with the increase in HEAT!
Not to mention if you do plan on using a Mac Pro as a server, redundant power supplies are a must! That means more space is needed!
What about raid cards and gpu's? Will they need to be redesigned to fit in the Mac Pro? Please don't tell me Apple will put in an integrated Intel GPU that would epitome of stupid! The Mac Pro is a workhorse! A beast! If anything go bigger!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I will pay up to $5,000 for an Apple branded Tablet Mac. I don't understand why they don't have one already. I've always preferred pen and paper to a keyboard, and will be the happiest dork alive when Apple releases a Tablet Mac.
Pen and paper are the foundations for most graphic artwork. One of Apple's target audiences is the graphics industry. It just makes sense.
I'm not a fan of Palm or any other of those tiny handhelds. A Tablet Mac needs to be a freakin' Tablet. I'd pay more for a decent one of those than I would for a Mac Pro.

Apple is being more directly compared to Dell and such these days since they are running Intel chips. And the PC makers are going to put those processors in their computers as soon as they can. If Apple doesn't want to look like they are behind in the times, they have to put these processors in also.
Do you really think Dell will put merom in ALL laptops and not use yonah at all? I doubt it. Yonah will likely always be cheaper and we'll probably see it for a while in budget laptops. I could see yonah either staying in macbooks for a bit, or staying in the base model only (or even a special edu config like the iMac has).
MacBook and MacBook Pro are soldered. So no, you can't change it.
The iMac and MacMini are socketed.

If you read up on the Yonah and Merom chip architectures, you'll see that that Merom has significant architectural improvements over Yonah, including a 4MB L2 cache and most notably 64-bit support over Yonah's 32-bit support. This is very significant since Jobs is pushing Leopard and its 64-bit goodness. :cool:

Wow, I want one! This will be my next PC desktop, definitely. Now it's a question of timing.
I have a 15" MacBook Pro, and my PC desktop is a 3.6 GHz Pentium D Extreme (two cores each with Hyperthreading, looks like 4 cores) that doesn't really need to be replaced yet. I want my first desktop Mac, but I'm trying to work down my debt and then save for a sports car, so I have to make some sacrifices...
The Mac Pro will have to wait (as long as I can resist the temptation). Besides, by that time something better will inevitably come along. But I have to give Apple applause. I like the SATA drive cages. And finally nVidia support for X86 (I wonder if the MacVidia project is now dead). 3 GHz dual Woodcrest is very, very tempting :) Maybe I can get my job to buy one...

Don't think they will be complacent, but most likely without Steve Jobs they'll have a harder time.
As far as complaining about C2D, MBP res, etc. , add Blue Ray that's never an issue for me.
I don't buy any Apple product until I check out it's what I want or it's close enough to jump.
I was on the sidelines until 3rd gen ipod, on the sidelines until MBP's fell into my price range ( I like to buy one generation back), and currently on the sidelines until ipad 3 or 4 as well as iphone 5 or 6.
Good things come to those who wait. (I am from a generation that can wait without withdrawal symptoms)

I just want other companies to succeed, if only to make my Apple products that much better. I was a little worried until I saw who wrote the article. It's Charlie Demerjian and I've never seen a tech journalist as full of **** as he is. No need to worry, Apple ain't switching to ARM chips in their Macs.

IMHO it proves again that mixing on-the-paper-notation (leaving out the multiplication sign) and computer notation ( '/' instead of the paper notation) simply leads to confusing situation and needs to be avoided

If it is to have an easier time with conversions and what not, then why would I leave a system that I am very familiar with, even if it is not base 10?
I don't believe one system is better than the other. They are just different.
Metric is just easier to learn. Period. How many inches to 7 yards? If I want to divide 7 yards, 8 & 13/16 inches into 3 equal sections (+/- a 1/4 inch) what is that length? If I want to estimate how heavy something is, I can fill a metric container with water and know how heavy it is since 1 litre = 1 kilo. Etc Etc How heavy is a gallon of water? A pint? A cup?
Yes there will be transitional period. People with a "feel" for things will be confused for a bit. But keep in mind that many of the things that measure will be in US units for a bit.

For manufacturing, my impression is that the U.S. does use metric. Maybe that is because most stuff is manufactured overseas or for something like automobiles, they are marketed worldwide.
I can tell you that a lot of stuff manufactured in the US is still using the old units. We Canadians, supposedly metric, get to live with it. We don't make our own paint cans, so we buy a gallon of paint. But... we can't label it as a gallon so it's sold as a 3.79 litre can. Same thing for beer. We buy it in 331ml, or 347ml units (or something like that).
Best of all.... When Environment Canada calls for a -5� day I crank the thermostat up to 69 and think about roasting a 3kg chicken with 1/2lb of potatoes, in an oven set at 375. When I bought the chicken the supermarket had a sale on in the deli. Buy 1/2 lb of sliced roast beef, and get 100gs of potato salad free.
I'll drive 10 km to visit my friend who lives in a 1200sq/ft house. It's nice, they have a view since they are 300m(etres) up the bluff. They can see Five Mile Creek, which is at least 25km away. Except if it's storming. We can storms here with winds of at least 100kph and that will drop an inch or two of rain. On the mainland, the Fraser river, which is over 2200 km long, can rise 10, 12, even 15 feet in the spring melt. The flow is an astronomical number of cubic feet per minute, and it gotta be moving at a 15-20kph easy. Though sometimes they do quote that figure in cubic metres per minute (264 gallons).
I have both imperial and a metric socket wrench kits. I've assembled BBQs that had both. You can tell which parts came from the US, and which didn't. IKEA is always metric. Lawnmowers are typically Imperial. My camera gear is both. (Tripod sockets are 1/4 or 1/8 inch coarse threads. Lighting stands use metric allen keys, unless they are US made.)

If MacOSXRumors is predicting it, then it's never going to happen.
But a couple months ago weren't they saying around/ after thanksgiving becasue Merom was slightly bigger than Yonah. Where did that go?

To be fair, I think you are thinking of MacOSRumors (MOSR), not MacOSXRumors. The former have a terrible record in regards to rumours (ie they make up everything), while the latter seem to be a bit more reliable. Shame they are named so similarly though.

If MacOSXRumors is predicting it, then it's never going to happen.
But a couple months ago weren't they saying around/ after thanksgiving becasue Merom was slightly bigger than Yonah. Where did that go?

What uncanny timing-- a couple of days after Intel comes out with their 3D chip thing, sending ARM's share price tumbling to artificially affordable prices, this rumour comes out which, if widely accepted, would boost ARM's share price greatly. Someone could potentially make a lot of money out of this. Especially as Semiaccurate's sources are anonymous, I reckon this rumour should be treated with great scepticism.

The big deal is that i do not want buggy, resource stealing software on my mac. Simple as that.
Exactly, there's no reason for a Mac to need virus protection. Just a waste of CPU cycles, RAM, and disk IO.
And any PC user that doesn't have AV protection is just asking for it. It's not our responsibility to save their ass. Maybe if they actually do get a(nother) virus they will make the switch!
