Am I sensing doubt from the "fearless leader" already? I'd suggest you quit your whining and focus on the task at hand. Your decisions have already cost the group a healing treasure.

That was kinda lame, so I ordered you this book. I had it sent overnight to you. Enjoy your reading.

a retina display on the 13" MBP would be the one thing that would get me to upgrade almost immediately.

Your reaction is nearly identical to mine (although I am interested in seeing a Retina Display on the 11.4" MBA):

Double the pixel density on the 11.4" MBA screen, and I will pay $3k for that computer on the spot (even if I just upgraded to the Sandy Bridge version the week before). The stunning display on the iPhone 4 put them into a class unmatched by their rivals.

I can't wait...even if it still takes years to trickle down to the MBA. Someday all computer screens will have Retina Displays (and we will only see screens where the pixels are visible in a museum). Although I may be dead by then... :)

Even so, the USA is in dire need of a decent cell phone. The fact that the Razr is so popular says it all. The Razr is a terrible phone (along with most other Motorolas for that matter). And the rest of the selection available is pretty sad too!

It's true...but I don't see it changing anytime soon. Americans are used to getting free or cheap phones when they sign up for a carrier contract. The carriers subsidize the cost so that expensive phones can be had for <$200. They RARELY pay full retail price ($300-$700) on a phone...mainly only when they break theirs and still have time on their contract. The way I understand it, the rest of the world pays full retail everytime they want a new phone. Is this right?

I am happy for this, this means when my upgrade happens, iPhone 6 will be a HUGE one :-)

Yeah Exaclty i was hoping that my iPhone4 wasn't going to become obsolete after only a few months of being on a 24 month contract! Apples good, but they do like to make my products feel slow and old :(

But likely not if the mood strikes you at 2 AM, or on a holiday.

You don't have to convince me that downloads are good, again, I have been installing my OSes over the Internet since the 90s. Apple is late to this game.

But the premise here was that it was "easier". It isn't. It might be more convenient for some people, but the Mac App Store doesn't make it any easier than it was from physical media.

    @ Mac'nCheese and Tilpots

I think tilpots has shown that he understands the proper priority of operation but is simply stating the fact the this notation can lead to interpretation or at least doubt as to what is meant. I clearly see the answer as 288 and would consider 2 a wrong answer. But if you take it for it's face value, it has to be 288, write it down with and X, instead, you'll end up with 288, and that's what should be meant. But I still think this is a ****** notation and a second set of parentheses would make it clear.

Wow I should be studying way more complex stuff than this right now...

But don't expect Merom in the MacBook anytime soon.

I don't think it would appeal to that many people, to have an Apple MP3 player. I mean, the existing ones aren't great sellers.

See the problem here? The reason the iPod took off was because it wasn't like the existing MP3 players.

Take a look at a group of current products:

    1. The UMPC. Seems like a good idea, but not successful so far. Why not? Here's Gartner:[quote]

This and your other comments are spot on.

The perfect device will never be found IMHO.

For work I am looking at the likes of the Cingular 8125. A better keyboard than my Treo 650, and 802.11b support. Add to that basic support for MS Office apps.

For travel I see the Sony UMPC being OK. It could replace my Epson P-2000 perhaps for photo storage on trips. The shame is that cell phone companies have not let us to share a common phone number between devices - with out us being required to use call forwarding.

I for one would love the ability to pick the device that makes sense at the time for cell phone use. At work, something like the 8125. When out and about sight seeing and shopping, some like the Razor. When traveling a small tablet PC.

But the Tablet could be a good start point, before shrinking it to an iPod Video/iPhone Video form factor. Or could we have both? Hopefully.

The only thing that would make the T1 renderings a "killer app" for me is a slide out keyboard.

Apple brings out the 'App Store'.. everyone copies them....It's generic.

except the appstore is/was nothing new. They just took what handango website was doing and made it into a convenient app instead of going to a website.

...and I think that will be the time to free myself from Apple bondage and return to the Windows fold. Especially if this is a sign that Apple are moving away from "proper" computers and pouring everything into iOS. :(

I jumped back to Windows recently after being Apple-exclusive since 1997 precisely because of the iOS direction everything is taking. Honestly? Not that hard of a transition. :P

As for the ARM thing, Apple has proved its mastery of the architecture with its mobile devices, so however radical it may be, the migration it seems plausible to me. Considering I'm just getting comfortable with x64 Assembly I wish it didn't. ;)

Might piss off the developer base though.

SI is superior in conversions only
Imperial is superior as I actually have a feel for the numbers

It's also easier in calculations - each unit is a derivative of the seven base units, each with a conversion factor of 1.

Yes, let's not change it because YOU actually have a feel for the numbers.

As for having a feel for the numbers, he's not alone. I have nearly 20 years of professional experience using Imperial units as a mechanical engineer, as does every mechanical engineer in the U.S. Switching systems (or, rather, making it mandatory) will require all of these engineers to re-learn the formulae they've known and used for decades. That's the equivalent of millions of man-years of engineering experience down the drain. That isn't progress, no matter how much you might want want to believe it is.

We need to switch to the metric system, what we have now is ****ing crazy when looking at the rest of the world...this is coming from a bio major who has to deal with SI units daily

    SI != metric.

I deal with both daily - our electrical system (Watts, Amperes, Volts, Ohms, etc.) are all metric and SI. Using Imperial units doesn't make understanding those SI units any harder.

For the love of your education system, do make the switch! I'm an engineering student from Canada. So I have to learn both imperial and SI. Imperial is such a pain in the ass.

I was an engineering student in the U.S., and I learned to use both systems - and yes, calculations using SI units were simpler. But the reality is that mechanical engineers here do not measure refrigeration in Watts, they use Btuh or tons of refrigeration. We don't use degrees Celsius, we use degrees Fahrenheit. We don't measure airflow in liters per second (which isn't even an SI unit; the proper convention would be cubic meters per second), we use cubic feet per minute. And as such, that's the system I've grown comfortable with as a professional.

Really, most opinions I see in the US to keep the imperial system is because you're not accustomed to it.

Which translates to an incredible cost of switching, and a near-certainty of an avalanche of errors.

...the difference between 37 and 38 degrees Celsius is 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, hardly a noticeable difference when it comes to weather forecasts.

You'd make a great point if weather forecasts were all we used temperature measurements for.

For chilled water, a 12 degree (F) temperature differential equates to 2 gpm per ton of refrigeration. Every mechanical engineer knows that. Force him to use SI units, and the game changes completely; calculations that could once be done in your head now require a calculator. You would achieve the opposite effect.

I'm not so sure. If a recipe calls for 2 tablespoons, is it not just as easy to measure out 30ml?

Measuring or counting out two is always easier than measuring or counting out thirty.

Are there really any benefits to the Customary scale, or do we just perceive benefits because it's what we're used to?

I don't know that there are benefits to using customary units; but there are indeed benefits to not switching units. Not the same thing.

Metric is just easier to learn. Period.

    That's one opinion. Period.

If it were so damn easy, everyone would know it, now, wouldn't they?

I think it would be cool if Apple came out with a Mac Mini Pro.

Merom core 2 duo, X1900 GPU, slightly enlarged case, Sata 500GB HD, FW 800, SuperDrive. All for under $1250.00

You want a $300-500 video card in a $1200 machine. Lets be realistic. BTO option yes, built in HELL NO ! The 500GB HD is also overkill. I would expect your config to be $1500-1800. I would like to see a $1199-1399 base price for some sort of tower. One Superdrive Bay, two HD bays [I full, one empty]. PCI Express with one or two empty slots.

Well guys, I just called my local Apple store and they have the kit in stock. That, and given the 1 -2 months delivery on apple.com and no news at all from BLT, means that for me at least, it's time to bite the bullet.

I've thought about doing the same thing, but I'm traveling most of December and won't be in my car much. Look forward to your thoughts especially about how well the bluetooth speakerphone works while driving around.

It seemed like a cogent point to me. Your perspective will change if you do any number of things. Bet on horse races for a living and you'll never look at a horse in the same way that other people do.

    Earlier itcheroni said ...

Now I don't mean to be cruel, but he isn't making anything, creating anything or contributing anything to society through this livelihood. He's merely siphoning off the flow. And he wants to talk about perspective? It seems to me that making a living that way is guaranteed to give you a warped perspective.

    It's a perspective I'm glad I don't share.

Sure he is. He is creating liquidity in a financial market. He is the grease in the financial cogs. Just because you do not understand how a process works is no excuse to be dismissive of it.

I will now be picturing Steve Jobs answering that phone during his Keynote in my dreams. :)

I cannot see it happening. I am not saying it won't be released in August but it wont be at the WWDC.

For a start, the Worldwide Developers conference is not a suitable place to release an American-centric consumer product.

Secondly, this would be big news and would require its own dedicated news conference. It would be really hyped up to all the assembled press.

    Not coming at WWDC.

oh, and I hope this thing makes it international when it does finally come.

    Dunepilot
    Nov 23, 05:44 AM
Well, I've recently heard some speculation about a smart device from Apple to go along with the consumer device and if Palm is hearing the same whispers, I'd think it would be a bit concerning. However, Palm just introduced the Treo 680p, so it may not matter as much, once that has been deployed on various carriers' networks.

Yeah, I have too, but I don't buy it, really. If you look at Apple's products aimed at professionals/businesses, they're exclusively either Macs or software/software houses they've acquired. I don't think Apple is likely to break with the success it has had offering consumer hardware like the iPod. The iTV will follow in that tradition.

For the record, I really like PalmOS. It does what it's supposed to do very well. What concerns me is the way the companies (or have they reamalgamated now?) are being led in a strange direction - the move to Windows Mobile looks to me like Palm/Palmsource trying to hedge their bets rather than properly marketing what they have had going for them all these years. Time will tell whether it's a good business decision, and whether the PalmOS survives at all. I, for one, hope that it does.

If I remember correctly, Palm software and products were originally developed by a group of ex-Apple employees, weren't they? I think they're the same faction that struck out for a bit by starting Handspring (later brought back into the fold).
